Day 39-10: Rheinau, Switzerland

37 km (133 including train)

Ride details

First day of riding on the Rhine.
We hopped on a train to Konstanz (Constance) on Lake Bodensee(Konstanz). Everything has both German & Swiss names to add to everyone's confusion. Anyway the Rhein that we are following runs out of the Bodensee (a big lake) near the city of Konstanz. We rode from the train station and headed southwest, generally following signage all day.
We didn't plan a place to stay, which was a bit concerning. But, by 6 we had found a place, it's some kindness of strangers. Very little English is spoken, adding to the adventure.

Oh ,did I mention that it rained most the day yesterday and we needed shoe covers & pants. Today our rain jackets were enough. We could smell the rain before it started.

A midieval town right out of a medieval storybook.

  3. Omg, I recognize this..... I am just following you after one week absence. Allen and I rode that path from Konstnaz to Schaffhausen last October. Wait until I show you some of my photos. Those mdievil towns, well - that is where I spent my youth, never thought they were special. My hometown was founded in1048, the city became part of Switzerland in 1503, my grandma's house was built in 1643, it was just nirmal and natural. When I came to the US and stuff that was 100 years old and people called it antique....I always chuckled...!!!

  5. David, in that part of Switzerland it is the law to keep the exterior of the buildings the way they were, usually they are gutted and are ultra modern inside....!!!
