Today was the day of meeting people. Several people just started talking to us. There was an 85 year old lady who came up to me while I was waiting for Dana at the grocery store. Her English was perfect, she had learned English in school and perfected it when she and her husband were in Japan. The next was a man who came out of the bank after Dana and noticed my mirror, then noticed we were looking at our maps. Although he wasn't a bicycle rider (he told me he had MS), he explained the way. After we had parted ways and Dana was in a shop, he pulled up in his car, got out and we started talking again. He had a big stuffed bear in the passenger seat of his car. Next we were stopped by a cyclist going in the other direction. We spent another 20 minutes talking to him. It was quite phenomenal, as I think I said Germans are very friendly.
That reminds me that I haven't mentioned all the cyclists we have met along the way. All with unique stories. One I need to mention we saw along the dike leaving Vienna and then met and talked to in Bratislava was Tommy https://tommyleavestown.wordpress.com/2015/06/13/vienna-budapest-hello-and-hello/ an adventurous young Belgium man from Berlin. He is on a two year journey with his dog, Fehk. I've been reading his blog. He wrote a description of Hungary that is so "spot on" I thought I'd share it with you.
