Dynamic positioning instead of an anchor & then used a tender to get to shore. It was a "lovely" port as the British would say.  The seaport retreat for Rio.

Jan 29 Salvador

A spectacular day greeted us as we arrived in Salvador, the 3rd largest Brazilian city. Temp in the low 80's. We will take a 2 hour city tour.


The ship has 55 meters above water and 8 meters below. The captain explained that all the heavy stuff, fuel engines, etc. the living and quarters above weigh much less, so the ship isn't as top heavy as it looks.

Jan 28 Sea Day

We rounded Esquina do continente, the corner of the continent, today as we took in ship activities including a UK comedienne, Mike Doyle who had great fun disparaging all of us Cunarders.

Missed both the sunrise & the sunset that are supposed to be particularly quick at this midpoint in our earth.

Our first stop in Brazil, South America.

We decided to take a tour in this port & Canard discouraged people from just walking off the boat. It was several miles to the town center past lots of impoverished housing. Our guide said they were homes for "invaders", I'm thinking he meant immigrants. I was glad we booked a tour. Our view was skewed by the stormy weather. It was hot, humid & rained most of the day.

What a fun excuse to party.  We stayed up to watch the ballroom dancers,  they were so inspiring. Everyone was wearing a Scottish plaid and many women wore red to honor the poet who wrote Tam o' shanter and Auld Ang sang.  We eat dinner with a Scottish couple,  a very talented Jim, recited Burns. poems for us.

We are traveling along the coast of Brazil in very muggy heat today as we pass the mouth of the Amazon and cross the Equator.

Aboard The Queen Victoria

Sea Day. Jan 24

We are traveling at about 20 knots.

On the shore days we have walked off the ship walking 3 to 6 miles. But urban areas of the Carribean are basically sad unkept places. Our next stops will include guided shore excursions, so our experience may be more selective.
Cunard does a great schedule of activities to keep us busy. There are lectures, films and musical entertainment. There is a wonderful fitness room and walking on the deck.
Not totally impressed with the food, everything cooked has lots of added salt & oil, so I'm very limited. Eating lots of fresh raw veggies and trying not to be tempted.
Hoping to not gain one ounce!!


We are establishing a daily routine routine.


The temperature has become warmer as we traveled toward the Equator & the mouth of the Amazon. That's a welcome change.
