Left Burlington Iowa the same way we came in and crossed back over the Mississippi and rode in the flood plains on the Illinois side. It was a fast day, with smooth roads. We were anxious to beat the heat. My bicycle computer registered a high of 104 degrees. A pretty accurate record of how it felt. We averaged 13.4 mph. The fastest, a rider from Scotland who usually is last finished first at 19.0 mph. It is never a race with this group, but there are often comparisons made.
As we rode through Muscatine we passed the Heinz catsup plant a reminder of how some of the corn and soy beans we have seen will be used in the food supply.
