Fort Davis to Marathon, TX (Ma RAY thon)
59.3 mi
roadkill: deer
As I was cruising down a gentle slope on Hwy 118 with a wide smooth shoulder I ran over a screw which embedded itself into my back tire. (I try to keep a look out for that very thing, but I was enjoying the ride and not looking for debris as I usually do. So I had my first flat.. Karen Cooper came along with her handy tool and helped to speed up the process. Lois and her sister Linda stopped by with moral support. Helped a lot, to not be left out there to do on my own. It would have taken me a lot longer. I got the wheel off and then Karen helped me put on the new tube. We covered the hole with some duct tape...not sure if I'll change the tire. It is keeping the full inflation to 120 so I'll just have to hope I don't hit the same spot with some other debris. We will all be expert tire/tube changers by the end of this trip.
Ride was pretty easy one, few rollers, mostly flat. Wind gusts in the last 2 hours. Kept my ear warmers on and long sleeves which kind of buffeted the wind a bit. Most everyone rode the whole thing today. Amy, one of the SAG drivers is fighting a cold, so she rode in the van to giver herself more time to get well.
I'm feeling great, my hand didn't hurt much today, still taking Aleve, so it will be fine.
Heading to Sanderson and then Del Rio...I'll be thinking about Arrio (my nephew who was named after the Rio Grande.
