March 24 - 25

Van Horn to Ft. Davis (highest town in Texas)
Indian Lodge State Park, near McDonald Observatory
elev: 5200 ft.

Had to miss a beautiful ride today.  Smashed (exaggeration) my left hand in the SAG car door.  Started riding but decided it needed TLC today.  Elevated it, took Ibuprofen, and iced it while riding the miles in the van.  Dumb, how quickly perfect health can be changed by a simple mistake.
20+ miles were on freeway, the rest had a west Texas wind (19 to 25 mph) to help and hinder riders on Texas chip seal.  So far only 6 did the whole ride. Looked very doable from inside the van, but wind and elevation gain made it difficult.
Rest day tomorrow should help with healing...so should be ok on Friday to continue the journey through Texas.

Found out Leslie flew back to home to her ailing mother this morning. Her mother, who has Alzheimers,  had a turn for the worst.  Leslie is a writer by trade and talent and this trip was the first time she had to get away after several years of caring for her husband and now her mother.  She will be missed by us all.  She was one of the strongest riders.

Indian Lodge at Ft Davis State Park is adobe construction CCC project that was renovated to its original splendor in 2005.  We have spacious rooms filled with knotty pine furniture and woodwork, shutters and doors, new fixtures, clean and bright.  A piece of heaven compared with the last two places we stayed.
