66.4 miles
Road kill: skunk (good to avoid)
Elev: 3766 ft.
Flat, country roads until we got into El Paso. Busy urban streets with no bike lanes and we are back to obnoxious drivers. New Mexico has the most courteous drivers, they all move over or slow down until it is clear to pass. The two lane road with no shoulder wound its way south among pecan orchards, leek and cotton fields. Signs and plowed fields indicated that chili's will be planted soon. Probably as soon as the nights aren't below freezing. This morning's ride started in 31 degrees...my hands were frozen for the first 10 miles. I put a shower cap (very handy to save from motel rooms) over my helmet and my head warmed up immediately and the warm blood found its way to the rest of me. I had on every piece of riding clothing that I brought with me, including a new rain jacket I purchased in Silver City. I didn't start removing layers until after 40 miles. Just removed one jacket, arm warmers and rain pants (wore them for warmth). It was still chilly, but very sunny and perfect riding.
In El Paso we rode on the Caesar Chavez freeway which parallels the infamous fence. Looks like the fence of a prison.,..so are we in prison or are they?
