April 11

Lake Charles to Lafayette, LA
84 miles
Roadkill: armadillo (one very fresh), raccoon, oppossum, snake (very big one)

How can you tell that you are in Louisiana (Loosiana)?  Graves are vaults above ground, no one fences there dogs (love to chase bicycles), counties are called parishes, lots of French names for streets and locations, Catholic influence is promonant, azaleas are beautiful, more trailer homes than permanent houses and  many have empty space under them (no basements here, of course), lots of bugs in the air (have to remember to keep mouth closed).

Today's ride was across the Mississippi delta, flat, flat, flat.  Saw rice fields, crayfish bogs and miles of flat. Roads were better than yesterday's, but were just as straight and flat.

Highlight of the day was being chased by a dog...the kind that runs out without a sound and starts barking at your heels.  Luckily I must have yelled loud enough, since he didn't bother anyone after me.  Again the highest elevation was two overpasses.  One went over the railroad tracks.  Amtrak has a route that just about follows the Southern Tier route that we are on.

Scary dog situation, but sounds like you saved the day!
I understand you have a day off on a plantation (with no Internet access) ... ENJOY & Rejuventate! Perhaps you'll be privilaged to some Jambalaya, and a little cajan music down on the bayou!
I'm jealous of the awesome workouts you're getting and the great strengthening & toning you're doing for your body while enjoying such an awesome get-away!You're going to be one very strong tortoise!! lol (& your category is only relative, of course; even if you're a tortoise in your group, you're a hare in comparison to me & the average Joe.)
Btw, you do know why a bicycle can't stand on it's own, right? ... it's two-tired.
Wishing you sparse traffic and wide, smooth shoulders!

  3. Appreciate your pun! and the Hemingway quote. He obviously had some bicycling experience.
