April 14

From St. Francisville to Hammond Louisiana (just up the freeway from New Orleans)
88.2 miles
13.1 avg

Rode with Mike, Rita and Alayne the whole day.  I actually was able to stay with them the whole time.  Finally feeling stronger.  During the last 10 miles when I started to lag behind a bit, Rita slowed down and pulled me up by having me draft behind her.  Amazing...it actually works.  It was probably the most fun I've had on this trip, since I wasn't out there alone at all.  I usually don't mind being alone, since I ride way alot.  Having company all day was a bit of a treat.

We started the day with a police escort out of St. Francisville, since the road we had to leave on was very busy  and not very safe riding conditions.  The owner of the Butler Greenwood estate, Anne Butler, arranged it for us.  Very nice southern hospitality.  Rest of the ride was on some very busy roads as well as quiet ones...being in a group helped to slow down the traffic a bit, so it was a comfortable ride.  Mike is generally the leader of the group and she is consistent and easy to follow, no sudden unexpected moves so the traffic respects her and the rest of us reap the benefits of riding with her.  She also never gets lost...I don't have to pay attention to my cue sheet.
