Watching the Tour de France, Utrecht, NL

12 km ride with
Ride details

Stage 1and 2. The time trials and the first long stage.

The crowds were full on people my size. It was great to be among so many tall people. There has to be a lot of Dutch in my genes.

Watching the time trials is a lot like watching the Luge in the Olympics. Winter 1972. Anyway, we watched the opening parade of cars. I grabbed a hat for Dana and she snagged a great buff for me. Then we walked toward the finish. I got the attention of the woman who was monitoring the viewing stands,  and before I could ask my question she invited us into the stands. She said there weren't enough people using it. That's how we watched the time trials, to the very end.
It was so hot and uncomfortable that I doubt we would have stayed to watch the whole thing, otherwise.

Sorry no pics...difficult to load on most hotel wifi systems.

  1. This is very cool . true you don't get to see it from the same perspective as a helicopter or a motorcycle cameraman or even somebody along the course but to see the riders for a few seconds and then keep track of their times as the winner starts to emerge is just a once in a lifetime experience. I remember being really cold watching luge so you'll probably remember being really hot watching and bicycle time trials but that fades, the experience Iof watching the event will remain . BTW, Its really hot here also. The 4th of July parade in Hillsboro was a hot one in the wool suit. The picnic was nice afterwards in the backyard shade. Heading up to Forest Park to run on the shady trails and then I'll watch the time trials on the repeat on TV this evening
