Day 53-24: Ijsselstein, NL

86 km
Ride details

We are in a country that is primarily flat. But, I think every hill they have, we found and rode leaving Arnhem this morning. I actually don't usually mind hills, but this bike I'm riding with panniers is heavy.   I'm trying to preserve my knees to last a lifetime, so I take the hills carefully, which makes me slow.
By the time we were done with the hills we were out in the full sun riding on the dike. Besides the full sun there were a lot of crazy Dutch drivers speeding by. There are 3 lanes, 2 small ones on each side for bicycles and whatever's left is the middle lane for cars to share in both directions. Dutch drivers are so used to bicycles that they drive by fast within inches and don't slow down. Quite nerve racking. Miraculously I'm still alive to tell about it.
BTW: The Netherlands has the best cycling system. We figure out what number we want and ride to it following numerous directional signs. At each number there is a map to help you figure out where you want to go next. It is wonderful and primarily on bicycle paths.

  1. Following you on the associated GPS map is interesting. Although I don't know the names of all the towns, it does make it more like I'm there. You are certainly now our resident expert on world cycling
