April 5

From Bastrop to La Grange Texas
41.1 miles
Roadkill:  opposum, armadillo (sure looked like one, anyway)

Sue, Lynn, Pam and Mike tale a look at the maps for today.

Pretty easy day.  Humid and hot, but the wind made it all do-able. Started with a ride, first 17 miles, through the Bastrop State Park. Then onto a less traveled highway.  We ended with a nice wide shoulder on a very busy road.

The only wildlife on the ride today

Saw signs that said "Don't slow Texas down" and "Drive clean through Texas".

Sorry to see that some poor armadillo didn't make it. We have them here in South America, too. Ours usually get nailed for stealing penguin eggs. I just hooked onto your blog and have seen most of the pictures, but haven't read all the text yet. In the photos I see lots of pavement. Have you had to ride any gravel roads?

I can't imagine loving biking in heavy traffic but then Norm loves difficult left turns so it's all in the challenge I guess!!!! Love, Janice

I have to chuckle (or shiver lol) at your roadkill tallies and remember that they're 'up close & personal from your vantage point! That's great that you got to hook up with family in San Antonio!
A quote for you: "It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle." ~Ernest Hemingway
    Keep on Trekking!!

  7. Pavement:
No gravel, so far, except on the side of the road. Yes, I see more pavement than scenery...appreciate the Hemingway quote, very appropriate.

    Armadillos:
Ick, I can't imagine eating one of those things that I've seen on the road in soup. My friends, Laurence and Pat had a ceramic version sitting in their living room...they used roadkills to determine the coloring.
