April 20

From Dauphin Island, Alabama to Pensacola, Florida
71 miles
14.2 avg.

We got here by 1:30 so there is time to relax.

JoAnn Bary and Alyne enjoying the ferry
Caught the 8:00 ferry that crosses Mobile Bay.  What fun!  Went by some natural gas rigs and heard about how they are using the caverns to store compressed gas that is shipped there from China or wherever.  They will store it until the price goes up.  It is the same kind of gas they want to distribute by running a pipe across Oregon that so far has been stopped because of the environmental damage it will cause.

Anyway, the ride was flat after that great roads with bike lanes and little traffic.  We traveled many of our miles next the the white sand of the gulf.  Fort Morgan, Gulf Shores, Orange Beach, past the Naval Air Station and then to Pensacola.  The coast is lined with 20 story condominiums and beach dunes that are no longer available for foot traffic.  They are trying to restore the natural plant life that stabilizes the sand.
We are now in our last state, Florida. We have our last Margarita party tonight before dinner.

The sky is overcast today and we started to feel some raindrops as we finished.  The temperature was in the 70s so it was perfect for riding.

Our hotel is in downtown Pensacola.

  1. You're looking very fit.

You're right, downtown Pensacola did not make a lasting impression. I really can't remember it from 1969. I DO remember that Dauphin Island took the biggest hit from Camille. No early warning-no weather forecasts-no satellite images(sputnik had only been launched 12 years earlier, yet we had landed on the moon by July 1969 - 3 months before Camille.

My memories of the Gulf Coast that first year are of "clean-up" - fixing damaged boats - replacing antennas all around, and helping get commerce back going from Choctaw Point Coast Guard Station.

After you arrived, I only remember being with you - I DO remember looking forward to your arriving from Guam and I am looking forward to your return now, with the same deep feelings.

Have a great two week long party now that you're coasting...

    David
