41.8 miles
9 days out of 20 in Texas
Roadkill: pair of jeans sitting there like some guy just stepped out of them
Texas Chip seal!!!!You would think that this short mileage was a gift after our long day yesterday. We are learning that mileage doesn't necessarily determine the difficulty of the ride. The traffic that we didn't have over the weekend returned today with a vengeance. Lots of semis made this a noisy ride. Goods being transported across the southern USA. Saw two 100 car+ trains with double trailers piled on most the cars.
Shoulder was wide most of the way, but the chip seal was particularly brain rattling most of the ride. It was a slight uphill all the way, also.
Riding on US Business 90 through Del Rio, past Laughlin Air Force Base and then past massive ranch entrances that go somewhere, but there is little evidence from the road beyond the gate with names like IO Ranch. I took pictures of the base entrance and thought of Martin (my brother-in-law) being stationed here in the '80s.
Fort Clark Springs reminded me of the Vancouver Barracks as I came in. They have converted the enlisted soldier barracks into multiple rooms for a motel. Its been a while since it was remodeled, but it is a step above last nights rooms.
Indeed JoAnn, I have wonderful memories of Del Rio and Laughlin AFB. Miss Annette and I met in a bar in Del Rio called the Gas Light, which everybody called the Trash Light. It was your typical beer-drinking, pool-shooting place to find your spouse! Well, it was for Annette and I anyway! It's all part of the Del Rio magic! I hope your all thru with Texas chip seal -- here's to smooth riding!
