Day 55-26: Katwijk, NL

25 km. At the sea!!!

Ride details

One last segment of my journey completed. We rode from where the Rhine leaves Lake Konstanz (Bodensee) to its end at the North Sea, on June 20. The delta of the Rhein splits the river into several possibilities in The Netherlands. We chose the Oude Rijn route. The river has several names as we journeyed on. The Rhein, the Rhine, Rijn and The Waal. Riding the Rhine, we didn't miss a kilometer and took only one day off to watch the Tour.

Another unusual experience was our ride on a chain pulled ferry that we had to manage ourselves to get across.

Tomorrow is our last day of riding. Soon the journey home.

I see the sea with no dike to keep it back. Is this a higher elevation than the rest of the country? Maybe only a small part the Netherlands is lower than sea level?? You can fill us in on this crucial infrastructure...

  2. Katwijk is about 13 meters above sea level.
With the threat of rising seas this country is in grave danger of being flooded over half its territory. The Dutch have built their environment over centuries of human control. It will certainly be interesting to see how they manage their future.
