I'm not yet convinced of the value of visiting the Caribbean except to help put some money into the economy. Martinique has been controlled by the French for 300 years, but they haven't had much interest in maintaining its infrastructure or pumping much money into the economy for at least the last 50 years. I think it is much the same for all of the Carribean. It just looks neglected. It was 94 degrees when we walked around the largest city. No obvious homeless, just a lot of very delapadated buildings.
Slaves were outlawed in 1824 ahead of the US. I think the economy is now totally dependent on tourism.
The most interesting sighting was watching a local older mad in a park practice a game called pocket ball using polished metallic balls about the size of a baseball. He smiled at us when we asked the game. The language is French & Creole.
