Day 2-Anna Paulowna to Sint Jacobiparochie, Friesland

80.1 km  Ride details

Our route took us over the 30 km Afsluitdijk, a type of closer dike that separates the North Sea from a body of water that is now a lake. It was completed in 1933. The wind was 50 km of it at times, stayed at our back the entire time. Like ride a bike with electric assist. Very spectacular ride with very little effort.

Rained threatened but mostly missed us including a stop to eat lunch in a bus shelter with just enough room for us on the bench and our bikes. We watched in comfort the wind and rain as it passed by.

Stayed with Jan, a warm Showers host in Sint Jacobiparochie, Friesland. He is bachelor, doing temp work, so he had time to take us on a historical tour of the area. We drove along the dikes (dijk), a series of 3 that protects the land as well as reclaiming the land for agriculture & living. The first was built by men from Rottterdam, many stayed and built their houses on top of the dikes. Now the houses on the dike are primarily owned by Germans for second homes or artists who love the light here.

This was our 2nd warm showers host. They are so generous, providing us with dinner and breakfast. Not much chance I'll loose any weight on this trip.
